The Mayan Calendar and 2012

Anicent calendars, dates, and ideas. The End of Days?

Among many other accomplishments, the Mayans invented a calendar of remarkable accuracy and complexity for their ancient times.

The Mayan Calendar coincides with the beginning of recorded History. Since then, as a human community, we have been in an ongoing process known as Civilization.

"The most ancient calendars were probably based on lunar observation and the Moon's phases"

Lets learn more about the calendar itself...

The Maya calendar uses three different dating systems in parallel, the Long Count, the Tzolkin (divine calendar), and the Haab (civil calendar). Of these, only the Haab has a direct relationship to the length of the year.

"The Mayan calendar, although highly complex, was the most accurate known until the introduction of the Gregorian calendar"
Funk & Wagnalls New Encyclopedia

The Long Count is really a mixed representation of a number, representing the number of days since the start of the Mayan era.

How does the calendar relate to 2012?

The Mayan Calendar appears to end on the last day of the '13th b'ak'tun'. a.k.a. December 21st, 2012. Although there is no actual proof of this, it is widely anticipated that this date could be the 'End of Days'.
